RIT Career Fair

March 30th, 2008 by DJ Schny

I was at the Sprint RIT Career Fair on Wednesday representing West. It’s always a fun time to go back and keep in touch with students and things going on at campus. This was one of the largest years yet and we were kept busy most of the day.

Muxtape

March 30th, 2008 by DJ Schny

So the other day while reading a post from Jakob’s blog, I noticed the new site Muxtape. It is amazing simple and powerful. Slap in a username, password, and email and you instantly have your own online “Mix Tape” of up to 12 songs and 10MB each. You can make as many mixes as you would like.

It’s a great way to share songs in my opinion. I’ve setup my own at djschny.muxtape.com where I will be adding cool new songs I come upon. Each muxtape even has their own RSS feed so if you have one that you keep changing people will get notified.

Great Designers

March 22nd, 2008 by DJ Schny

While doing some homework this weekend I read an article by Frederick P. Brooks entitled No Silver Bullet: Essence and Accidents of Software Engineering. It is quite old, but there was one thing that I really liked at the end of the article talking about great designers of software and how it is crucially important to the success of software and software companies. He then proceeded to talk about how companies should find and develop great designers. The last part of the article has been duplicated below for convenience.

My first proposal is that each software organization must determine and proclaim that great designers are as important to its success as great managers are, and that they can be expected to be similarly nurtured and rewarded. Not only salary, but the perquisites of recognition–office size, furnishings, personal technical equipment, travel funds, staff support–must be fully equivalent. How to grow great designers? Space does not permit a lengthy discussion, but some steps are obvious:

  • Systematically identify top designers as early as possible. The best are often not the most experienced.
  • Assign a career mentor to be responsible for the development of the prospect, and carefully keep a career file.
  • Devise and maintain a career development plan for each prospect, including carefully selected apprenticeships with top designers, episodes of advanced formal education, and short courses, all interspersed with solo-design and technical leadership assignments.
  • Provide opportunities for growing designers to interact with and stimulate each other

EVDO Rev. A

March 19th, 2008 by DJ Schny

Last week Sprint released a new ROM for my PPC-6800. It boasts two new features: EVDO Rev. A and access to the built-in GPS. I installed it on my device last night (was up to 3:30AM being a dork) and holy crap are the speeds kick ass!

I was only getting about 900 kb/s down and 160 kb/s up. These new speeds are fabulous especially the up speed, it is equal to or faster than stardard cable or DSL!

I’m still having some small issues with the GPS not acquiring a signal all the time, but I believe that might be due to the fact that I reset the device before the Sprint customizations ran, so that their custom apps would not be on the device. I’ll experiment more this weekend and let everyone know how it goes.

Sprint Data Usage

March 5th, 2008 by DJ Schny

I’ve had a pda phone for over three years now. During that time I’ve always had an unlimited data plan, for $7.50 a month you can’t beat it. I use my Windows Mobile device to its full potential and more.

  • direct push synchronization with the exchange server at work
  • gmail imap synchronization
  • streaming shoutcast or music from my server
  • mobile blog posts
  • youtube watching
  • weather
  • google reader
  • providing internet access to my laptop

And the list goes on. Recently sprint added the ability for you to see just how much data you’re using each month. After 3 weeks into the month, I’ve used almost 500MB of data. That’s quite a bit of traffic considering its a mobile device.

Golden Tee Crash

March 4th, 2008 by DJ Schny

Last month Zac, John, and I were at Quimby’s late playing darts and drinking. Next to the darts is on older (approx. 2003) Golden Tee machine. All of the sudden we noticed the following screen and had to snap a picture.

For some reason whenever I see these happenings I laugh like a true dork and have to take a picture, just like when I saw the system on the airplane.
